One of the most common questions we receive at Fazal Nursery is, 'How often should I water my plants?' The truth is, there is no single schedule that fits every plant. Watering depends on plant type, soil, pot type, and weather. Here is how to master the art of watering:
1. The Golden Rule: Touch the Soil
Never water blindly on a calendar schedule. Always test the soil moisture first. Push your index finger 1-2 inches deep into the soil. If it feels damp, wait a couple of days. If it feels dry and dusty, it's time to water.
2. Understand Plant Types
Succulents, Cacti, and Snake Plants store water in their leaves and roots, meaning they prefer their soil to dry out completely between waterings (usually once every 10-14 days). On the other hand, Ferns and Peace Lilies prefer consistently moist (but not soggy) soil.
3. Signs of Underwatering vs. Overwatering
Underwatering: Leaves will look dry, crispy, wilted, or curl inwards. The pot will feel very light when lifted.
Overwatering: Leaves will turn yellow, limp, and mushy. You may notice fungus gnats or a sour smell from the soil, which indicates root rot. Root rot is highly fatal, so always err on the side of underwatering.
